Notes: Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK) - USA, Virginia. TOP

Link 2: http://www.atk.com/

Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK) was an American aerospace, defense, and sporting goods company with its headquarters in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. The company operated in 22 states, Puerto Rico, and other countries. ATK's revenue in the 2014 fiscal year was about US$4.78 billion. On April 29, 2014, ATK announced that it would spin off its Sporting Group and merge its Aerospace and Defense Groups with Orbital Sciences Corporation.

ATK was launched as an independent company in 1990, when Honeywell spun off its defense businesses to shareholders. The former Honeywell businesses had supplied defense products and systems to the U.S. and its allies for 50 years, including the first electronic autopilot that enabled B-17 aircraft to accomplish pinpoint bombing missions during World War II.

In 2001, ATK acquired Thiokol, renaming it ATK Launch Systems in 2006, though it is still known within the industry by its original name. Thiokol was the sole manufacturer of the reusable Solid Rocket Motor used to launch the NASA Space Shuttle, which is being adapted for NASA's Space Launch System.

Also in 2001, ATK entered the sporting and law enforcement ammunition market with the acquisition of the ammunition businesses of Blount International. This acquisition made ATK the nation's largest manufacturer of ammunition. In 2009, ATK acquired Eagle Industries and in 2010 ATK acquired Blackhawk Industries Products Group Unlimited, LLC, diversifying into the security and law enforcement market.

Division: Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, (LCAAP)

In 2012, ATK was selected by the United States Army to continue operating and maintaining the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) for an additional seven to ten years. The LCAAP is a federally owned facility in Independence, Missouri. It was built by Remington Arms in 1941 to manufacture and test small-caliber ammunition for the army. As of July 2007, the plant produced about 1.5 billion rounds of ammunition per year. The LCAAP still tests ammunition and is the largest producer of small-arms ammunition for the U.S. military. ATK has operated the LCAAP since April 2001.

The United States Army and ATK opened a renovated ammunition production facility at the LCAAP in December 2014. The renovations improved efficiency and quality control. The Army and ATK invested $11 million to modernize "Building 65" for the production of 20 millimeter ammunition. These large caliber rounds are usually fired from automatic cannons mounted on ground vehicles and aircraft. Building 65 housed 20 millimeter round production until 1997, when it was moved to Building 3. About 50 people are employed on this line.

U.S. gun manufacturers offer pure industry plays to traders and investors while ammunition manufacturers dilute exposure through diverse company operations.

Armscorp [Arms Corporation of the Philippines] claims to be the largest arms and ammunition manufacturer in Southeast Asia. Armscorp is in over 60 countries and received their ISO 9001 certification in 1997. One of the original Marcos-era SRDP companies, it is engaged in weapons and ammunition manufacture. While selling to the PNP, and to some extent the AFP, its principal market is the civilian gun market, in the Philippines and abroad. ... Armscorp is the biggest supplier of ammunition for the Royal Thai Army, Royal Thai Navy and Royal Thai Police.

In 1905, two Englishmen named Roy Squires and William Bingham put up a photo print shop and merchandising firm in the Philippines. The company established was called Squires, Bingham & Co. Squires and Bingham eventually expanded their business to general trading; importing and retailing motorcycles and sporting goods - including firearms and ammunition. By the 1930's, Squires Bingham Co. had become popularly associated with sporting guns.

In 1941, the store - referred to as the "Sportsmen's Headquarters" - found a new owner in Celso S. Tuason, making it a wholly Filipino owned enterprise. After the war, due to foreign exchange controls, Don Celso Tuason decided to venture into manufacturing firearms and ammunition. In 1980, Squires Bingham Co., Inc. became the holding company of the Celso S. Tuason family and their varied business interests. Thus, Arms Corporation of the Philippines (Armscorp), the manufacturing company for firearms and ammunition, was born.

Barnaul Cartridge Plant JSC, is a manufacturer of industrial goods and ammunition in Barnaul, Altai Krai, Russia.

    Some of their brands:
    • CENTAUR ammunition cartridges have a polymer coating on the steel case, are berdan primed, use non-corrosive Belgian-made propellants produced by P.B. Clermont S.A., and are loaded with American-made "tombac" jacketed bullets produced by Hornady Manufacturing Company.

Barnaul began a process of retooling in 2009 to produce a new line of higher-grade ammunition to compete in the American and European markets. This was either due to their previous products being compared unfavorably or because Russian ammunition has a stigma of being poorly made and unreliable.
The first CENTAUR brand ammunition was produced in 2013.

    • BARNAUL series
  • Barnaul Gold ammunition cartridges, with brass cases.
Currently comes in 5.56×45mm NATO and 9×19mm Parabellum.

  • Barnaul Silver ammunition cartridges, with zinc-coated steel cases.
Currently comes in 5.56×45mm NATO and 9×19mm Parabellum.

    • Traumatic ammunition pistol cartridges fire less-than-lethal rubber bullets.
Currently comes in 9×19mm Parabellum and .45 ACP.

    • Military (mil-spec) ammunition cartridges.
Military cartridges made to contractor nation's specifications.
It also refers to civilian 5.56×45mm NATO and 7.62×39mm M43 Soviet full-metal-jacketed lead-core bullet hunting cartridges packed in novelty 700-round Warsaw Pact-style oval-shaped vacuum-packed sheet steel "spam cans".

    • MONARCH (Academy Sports) - Barnaul currently makes the steel-cased ammunition for Academy Sports' MONARCH brand. (Academy Sports is an American purchasing and exporting group that buys foreign made ammo and resells it under their brands).

BAE Systems Land & Armaments is a wholly owned subsidiary of BAE Systems Plc. and is responsible for the design, development and production of combat vehicles, ammunition, artillery systems, naval guns and missile launchers.

It is the largest such company in the world.
Upon its creation on 2 January 1985, Royal Ordnance plc owned the twelve Royal Ordnance Factories (ROFs) that remained open, plus the Waltham Abbey South site, RSAF Enfield and three Agency Factories. Several factors delayed the intended privatisation until 22 April 1987, when British Aerospace purchased the company.

BAE Systems was formed in 1989 by the merger of British Aerospace (BAe) and Marconi Electronic Systems (MES). BAe's land systems business was RO Defence, a major manufacturer of explosives, ammunition and small arms. MES owned Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd, manufacturer of the M777 howitzer.

In 1999 British Aerospace merged with Marconi Electronic Systems, the defence interests of GEC to form BAE Systems. In 2002 Heckler & Koch was sold to Heckler and Koch Beteiligungs GmbH. In 2004 BAE Systems acquired Alvis plc which was merged with the RO Defence business and ex-GEC plants at Barrow-in-Furness and Leicester to form BAE Systems Land Systems. RO Defence was renamed BAE Systems Land Systems (Munitions and Ordnance).

Until April 2003, BAE Systems was a relatively small player in the land systems industry, however following the 2004 purchase of Alvis Vickers, the aforementioned 2004 acquisition of United Defense and the acquisition of Armor Holdings in 2007 it is now one of the largest land systems defence contractors in the world.

On June 4, 2003 BAE Systems outbid General Dynamics for Alvis plc, the UK's principal land systems business. What had seemed a certain win for the US company was stopped by BAE Systems' surprise move. It has been seen as an attempt to keep such a strong competitor at bay in BAE Systems' "backyard." Alvis and BAE RO Defence were merged as BAE Systems Land Systems.

When Dick Olver was appointed Chairman of BAE Systems in July 2003 he ordered a review of the company's businesses which confirmed the attractiveness of the land systems sector. This shift in strategy was described as "remarkable" by the Financial Times. On March 7, 2005 BAE Systems announced the $3.174 billion acquisition of United Defense Industries (UDI). UDI, a major competitor to General Dynamics, was primarily a land systems manufacturer, boosting BAE Systems' involvement in this sector and its sales in the important North American market. UDI manufactured combat vehicles, artillery systems, naval guns, missile launchers and precision guided munitions.

Tom Rabaut was named President of the newly created BAE Systems Land and Armaments, he was previously Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President of United Defense since January 28, 1994. Rabaut retired on 1 January 2007 and was succeeded by Linda Hudson. Hudson has led General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products and held senior management positions at Lockheed Martin, Martin Marietta, Ford Aerospace, and Harris Corp.

In 2005 BAE Systems acquired the US company United Defense and merged it with the Land Systems business to create BAE Systems Land and Armaments. The former RO Defence business was renamed BAE Systems Land Systems Munitions. In February 2009, it was merged into GCS as Global Combat Systems Munitions.

BAE Systems Land & Armaments was created on June 24, 2005, following the completion of BAE Systems' acquisition of United Defense in 2004 and its merger with BAE Systems Land Systems. In 2007 BAE Systems acquired Armor Holdings adding to the size of Land & Armaments significantly. In February 2009, BAE Systems Land Systems Munitions was merged into GCS as Global Combat Systems Munitions.

GCS Munitions manufactures 4.6×30mm, 5.56×45mm NATO and 7.62×51mm NATO small arms ammunition, mortars, and land and sea artillery ammunition. It also produces explosives, guidance kits, propellants, demolition charges, initiators, pyrotechnics, and warheads for missiles, torpedoes and depth charges. These include the BROACH multi-stage warhead produced in partnership with Thales Missile Electronics and QinetiQ.

Link 2: http://www.fiocchiusa.com/
LINK 3: http://www.fiocchigfl.it/

Fiocchi Munizioni (Fiocchi Ammunition) is one of Italy's largest and oldest manufacturers of ammunition.
The Company's headquarters and main production plant are in Via Santa Barbara in Lecco, Italy.

In 1876, Giulio Fiocchi took over the ammunition production part of a weapon and ammunition company already based in Lecco, which produced small caliber ammunition.

At that time a radical change was introduced in firearms: the newly developed breech-loader replaced the traditional muzzle loader. Fiocchi started manufacturing cases with primers suitable for reloading; in the early 1890s production was extended to complete cartridges loaded with bullets or shot. At the same time, Fiocchi gave up the production of black powder, as it was no longer profitable.

At the beginning of 20th century, Fiocchi introduced a product diversification and successfully entered a new field of activity -snaps- made using scraps left after cartridge production. This brought to the creation of Fiocchi Snaps in 1903. Snaps business assumed an important role to counterbalance the trend of the ammunition market and at the end of 80's was so attractive that, upon Fiocchi's decision to focus on ammunition as its core business, the snaps factory was taken over by the European leader in this field.

During its long life, Fiocchi has manufactured all kinds of ammunition from pinfire, shotshells, and cartridges to all kinds of cartridges and cases, both rimfire and centrefire.

According to a recent interview with Carlo Fiocchi, the head of Fiocchi America, more than 75% of the ammunition sold by Fiocchi in the United States is also manufactured in the United States at Fiocchi America's production facility in Ozark, Missouri.[1] Specifically, Fiocchi America's composition of U.S. ammo manufacturing and sales according to the interview is as follows:

    • 95% of the center-fire rifle ammunition, which accounts for ~15% of Fiocchi's U.S. sales
    • 75% of center-fire pistol ammunition, which accounts for ~35% of Fiocchi's U.S. sales
    • 100% of shotshells, which accounts for ~35% of Fiocchi's U.S. sales
    • 0% of rimfire ammunition, which account for ~15% of Fiocchi's U.S. sales (along with components)

Fiocchi Munizioni is still entirely owned by private capital heading to the Fiocchi Family.

Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal (French for: National Factory of Herstal) -- self identified as FN Herstal and often referred to as Fabrique Nationale or simply FN -- is a leading firearms manufacturer located in Herstal, Belgium, and is owned by the holding company Herstal Group which is owned by the regional government of Wallonia. It is currently the largest exporter of military small arms in Europe.

FN is a subsidiary of the Belgian Herstal Group, which also owns U.S. Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) and Browning Arms Company. FN Herstal is the parent company of two United States entities: FN Manufacturing and FNH USA.

FN Manufacturing, located in Columbia, South Carolina, is the manufacturing branch of FN Herstal in the United States, producing firearms such as the M249 and M240 machine guns and M16 rifle, among others. FNH USA, located in McLean, Virginia, is the sales and marketing branch of FN Herstal in the United States.

Firearms designed and/or manufactured by FN include the Browning Hi-Power pistol, Five-seven pistol, FAL rifle, FNC rifle, F2000 rifle, P90 submachine gun, M2 Browning machine gun, MAG machine gun, and Minimi machine gun -- all of which have been very successful for the company.
FN Herstal's firearms are used by the armed forces of over 100 nations.

FN originated in the small city of Herstal, near Liège.
The Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre (French for National Factory of Weapons of War) was established in 1889 to manufacture 150,000 Mauser Model 89 rifles ordered by the Belgian Government. FN was co-founded by the major arms makers of the Liège region, with Henri Pieper of Anciens Etablissements, Pieper being the driving force and the primary shareholder of the new company.

In 1897 the company entered into a long-lasting relationship with John Moses Browning, a well-known firearms designer. FN was an important manufacturer of motor vehicles in Belgium, a development championed by Alexandre Galopin as managing director. Cars were produced in Herstal in the early 1900s until 1935. Production of FN motorcycles continued until 1965, and production of trucks until 1970.[5] In 1973, FN changed its name to reflect a product line diversified far beyond just "weapons of war", adopting the current name of Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal.

One of Fabrique Nationale's handguns, a Model 1910 semi-automatic pistol in 9×17mm (.380 ACP) (serial number 19074) was one of four weapons that were taken from the assassins of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, although it is unknown which of the four weapons actually fired the fatal round.

John Moses Browning began development of the Browning GP35 'High Power' (sometimes written as Hi-Power) pistol, the GP standing for Grande Puissance or "high power" in French. However, the weapon was finalized by Dieudonné Saive and did not appear until nearly a decade after Browning's death.

The FN Manufacturing LLC plant in Columbia, South Carolina is part of the military division of FN. It is primarily responsible for the production of U.S. military weapons, such as M16 rifles, M249 light machine guns, M240 machine guns, and M2 machine guns.

Established in 1933, IMI is a defense systems house specializing in the development, integration, manufacturing and life cycle support of modern land, air and naval combat systems and HLS solutions. IMI's world class combat-proven systems are developed by vertically integrated expert teams, working in close cooperation with the customers, the most prominent being the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

As a prime contractor for weapon upgrading programs, IMI is operating in many countries, leading international and local industry teams on large scale weapons modernization projects. IMI has developed unique methodologies, based on extensive expertise in diverse fields, including upgrading of tanks and other armored fighting vehicles, up-armoring light vehicles, production and modernization of artillery systems, development of combat engineering equipment, new weapon systems for the infantry unit, and much more. IMI has established partnerships with leading international defense firms and integrators, sharing the risk and potential of large-scale projects in an effort to meet the customer's most pressing demands.

Israel Military Industries Ltd. (IMI), also referred to as Taas, is an Israeli weapons manufacturer.
It manufactures firearms, ammunition and military technology mainly for Israeli security forces (especially Israel's army, the Israel Defense Forces or IDF), although its small arms are very popular throughout the world.

IMI has dedicated factories manufacturing ammunition for firearms, artillery (both explosive rounds and rockets), tanks and air-to-ground (both stand-off and direct attack). Many of its products are standard NATO-compatible, but IMI also produces eastern bloc-caliber munitions. However, for the past the weapons have not been STANAG compliant.

Besides small arms, the IMI also produces heavy weapons.
IMI engages in many upgrade projects for military vehicles (tanks, APCs and other armoured fighting vehicles). Upgrade components include firepower, survivability and maneuverability.

IMI also produces a wide range of defensive products such as vehicle add-on armor packages, land mine clearing systems, and reconnaissance systems and bridges. It also produces aircraft countermeasures, such as flares, decoys and electronic countermeasures control systems, some of which IMI now offers also for land- and sea-based platforms.

IMI also provides military training to the Israeli citizens.
IMI contracts its services to outside countries that need security and military training.
The clients come to IMI in Israel for months of security and V.I.P. training.

Israel Military Industries also has a partnership with the Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) in New York City. Metropolitan College of New York offers a classroom based Master's In Public Administration in Emergency Management and Homeland Security. In addition, all students go to Israel for an intensive study abroad seminar covering Homeland Security and Anti-Terrorism topics with Israel's top security and military experts.

The Small Caliber Ammunition (SCA) Division of IMI is located in Nazareth, where they manufacture 5 primary cartridge types for a countless number of military organizations and civilian markets overseas. ... their marketing methods yields about one million ILS per employee per year. They have a total of 250 employees.

The "Yitzhak" Division is one of the five divisions that make up IMI. It is named after the late Yitzhak Ironi (Grodtzer), who served as CEO of IMI and as Director General of the Israel Ministry of Defense. The flagship products manufactured at the Nazareth plant are 9mm Luger, 5.56mm (.223 Rem.), 7.62mm (.308 NATO) and 12.7mm (0.5") cartridges. In recent months, they have added the .338" Lapua Magnum sniping cartridge, the first batch of which is being delivered to IDF. ...

"We are the only supplier of small caliber ammunition to IDF. When they need special cartridges, they come to us and we have here an engineering and development department that takes care of those needs. Naturally, the cartridges are developed in accordance with their requirements, as sometimes those cartridges are intended for a specific mission and we can produce such cartridges within just a few months," explained Shmilovitz.
[Israel Shmilovitz, VP of IMI Ltd. and Managing Director of the SCA Division] ...

The manufacture of small caliber ammunition by Israeli Military Industries had begun (in 1933) even before the State of Israel was established. Back in 1945, during the underground movement period, 8 meters under the ground at Giv'at HaKibbutzim (The Ayalon Institute) near the town of Rehovot, 9mm ball cartridges were manufactured clandestinely for the submachine guns subsequently used during Israel's War of Independence. Following the announcement of the establishment of the State of Israel, the plant relocated to Tel-Aviv ... Only 21 years later was the plant relocated to Nazareth, and some people say that the idea was to provide employment to many local inhabitants who were unemployed in those days.

In the late 1970s, SCAMP (Small Caliber Ammunition Modernization Program) lines were established. These lines are used at the plant to this day for the mass production of 5.56 mm ammunition intended to fulfill the needs of the Israeli defense establishment mainly in emergencies, but they also produce ammunition for IDF, for the training activities of the various security organizations and so forth.

By the end of the second millennium, in the year 2000, the plant was NATO certified for two primary cartridges: 5.56mm and 9mm, which allowed it to supply these ammunition types to the most demanding NATO clients. Three years and 5 years later, respectively, two substantial contracts were finalized with the US Army for the supply of ammunition on a large scale. The combined scope of those contracts was more than US$ 200 million. -- in 2011 the last contract came to an end ....

In an attempt to avoid a 9commercial) crisis, the management of the SCA Division reached the conclusion that other markets must be found. Consequently, they tapped into the US civilian market where most of their present revenue comes from. It is an established fact that when wars are in progress, revenue increases, but when there are no wars -- revenue decreases, so the civilian market enabled the SCA Division to 'play it safe'.

"One must realize that the US civilian market is twice as large as the military market.
It is definitely a place where we wanted to be, so in that year we embarked on aggressive marketing activity opposite that market, ... Initially we obtained some contracts through the ATK Company, a significant company in the USA, and supplied them with ammunition for the US civilian market, which consists of intensive hunting and sport shooting activities. The Americans like to practice shooting, ... so they are very appreciative of quality ammunition that demonstrates good performance."
Israel Shmilovitz

... the most interesting marketing method is based on American bloggers who test the products personally and then serve as public opinion leaders in the extensive US civilian market.

The primary production line at the plant manufactures the 5.56mm cartridge. ...
The production line yields more than one million components per 24 hours
and operates around the clock in three shifts (excluding Saturdays). It was imported especially from Australia in the 1990s and is manned by a total of 5 employees per shift. These employees must wear gloves and use earplugs and are legally bound to undergo medical examinations once a year, owing to their direct contact with various hazardous substances.

The plant itself is fitted with a networked system that controls the quality data.
The managers can access the production line data so as to analyze the daily, monthly and annual production and efficiency statistics. "A cartridge is made from several components. The components we produce at the first line are the shells and bullets, which are manufactured using machining processes. After production, we test them here at the plant," says Eyal Zeevi, the Division's operations and production manager. "We serve as the national knowledge center on metal annealing. ... The shell must be sufficiently rigid, but at the same time sufficiently flexible," ... "We purchase the gunpowder and primers from outside sources. We fill the shell with gunpowder, fit the primer and bullet and that is how we produce a cartridge. Following several tests and inspections, we package the cartridges according to the client's requirements. After that we melt the surplus metal and sell it."

As the products are mass-produced, it is impossible to inspect each and every item, so the testing is based on sampling -- 100% of the cartridges are scanned by a specialized X-Ray scanner to verify that the shell contains gunpowder and that the bullet tip contains lead, so as to avoid any errors.

But beyond production and inspection, the most important thing, eventually, is the result. A given number of rounds should produce a 2 cm group at 100 meters -- this is the assurance given by IMI to all of its clients (with the minimum order requirement being one full sea freight container -- D. R.).

... Thomas Konami (40) and his team ... local shooting laboratory ... ammunition performance.
The tests ... are divided into two categories -- ballistic shooting and action shooting.

"Action shooting is easier to test, as we have to ensure that the ammunition is serviceable using the client's firearms," explains Konami, who personally fires about 120,000 rounds each month.

"Ballistic testing is more complex and the actual shooting is carried out using dedicated equipment. In this context we address critical details regarding performance, safety, bullet velocity, accuracy, penetration and so forth.

A test for IDF, for example, involves the firing of 2,500 rounds using seven different firearms they provide under extreme temperatures. We have state-of-the-art chambers that can operate in temperatures between minus 70 degrees and plus 70 degrees," he concludes.

Adapting to the Changing Reality
The proximity to the city of Nazareth does not bother the people of the SCA Division, who are involved in such sensitive activity. According to them, they have high fences and highly-trained security personnel, so they are OK. Internally, too, they have particularly critical procedures, which include surveillance cameras everywhere and strict inspections at the gates, so that no one may enter or leave while carrying any 'resources'.

... Nine years ago, a major fire that broke out on a Friday afternoon in an ammunition store at the plant led to the explosion of tons of munitions. The firefighting services announced, back then, that it was a high-risk fire owing to the ammunition and hazardous substances stored at the plant and a firefighting helicopter was rushed to the scene, but IMI insisted that it was a "fully controlled incident".

Today, the SCA Division attempts to remain in control especially in the context of the competition against the major ammunition manufacturers abroad, such as Winchester in the USA and Vista in Europe. In addition to the basic accuracy characteristic that was required in the past, the clients' requirements became more demanding over the years and at IMI they do their best to comply. "In addition to accuracy, penetration and stopping power are highly important today. We want to stop the attacker, so armor-piercing cartridges provide an effective solution to the requirements of overseas tenders and definitely to those of IDF," explains Shmilovitz.

The raw materials required in order to manufacture ammunition are not readily available in Israel, so the various materials are purchased mainly in Europe, the USA and the Far East. The idea is to transform the disadvantage into an advantage and buy raw materials at lower prices, for example -- as a result of changes in currency exchange rates. When the Euro is low, they buy in Europe and when the Dollar is low -- the USA will benefit, and so forth.

... revenue ... sales in the last quarter of the year are normally higher.
... upgrades. Raw materials are normally delivered around the midyear point, and sales come naturally after that. "This year, one third of our sales were to the US civilian market, but we also sold to civilian markets in Europe and elsewhere. Our sales to IDF account for about 44% of our total sales turnover and the balance consists of our sales to the rest of the world -- mainly to NATO members, contracts in Europe, South America and the Far East and about 11% to Israeli special operations forces, about which I will not elaborate," Shmilovitz explains. "Last year, on the other hand, we sold one quarter of our yield to the US civilian market and about one half to IDF," he compares.

... IMI's Small Caliber Ammunition Division ... to become as technologically-oriented as possible and to adapt itself to the reality (soon) machines may replace some of the employees. .. (and) will have a better accuracy performance than, say, the human eye. ... our production lines (will) operate at a faster pace and quality will automatically be higher."

Israel Exporting Ammo to Federal as U.S. Releases Ammo to Israel
- The Truth About Guns.
TOP
by Robert Farago, August 29, 2014

You may recall that America released ammunition supplies to the Israelis during their recent "police action" against Hamas in Gaza. You may be surprised to learn that Israel has been making and exporting ammunition -- albeit pistol rounds as opposed to 120-mm and 40-mm rounds -- to America for Federal Premium. That's the revelation unearthed by an investigation into the Israeli-owned shipping company Zim, the target of recent port blockades organized by Palestinian solidarity activists in California ...

... on August 15, just a few days before the blockade of the Zim Piraeus in Oakland, the Zim Constanza arrived at the Port of Savannah, along the Atlantic coast of Georgia, laden with millions of rounds of Israeli-manufactured 5.56-millimeter rifle bullets destined for sale in the United States. Records show that the Zim Constanza was also carrying 1.3 million rounds of 9-millimeter Luger bullets. The ammunition was destined for Federal Cartridge of Anoka, Minnesota. The company (which also operates under the name Federal Premium Ammunition) sells rounds of these exact specifications to the public, but also to the US military, and federal and local police agencies . . .

Bills of lading for the August 15 small arms shipment delivered by Zim show that the bullets were manufactured by Israel Military Industries Ltd., a weapons manufacturing company located in the city of Ramat Hasharon, north of Tel Aviv in Israel. Israel Military Industries supplies the Israel Defense Forces with many of its weapons, including missiles and artillery. Records show that the Israeli ammunition carried by Zim is being imported primarily by Federal Cartridge, but that several smaller companies in Tennessee and Washington State are also receiving small arms shipments delivered by Zim ships.

A year's worth of data reveals that a prolific quantity of ammunition manufactured by Israel Military Industries is being imported by Federal Cartridge on Zim ships into the United States. Several Zim vessels made at least 17 different trips between Haifa, Israel and the Port of Savannah over the last year, shipping ammunition for delivery to Federal Cartridge's facilities in Minnesota. Most of the ammunition consisted of 5.56-millimeter rifle bullets, but in July, the Zim Tarragona arrived at the Port of Savannah carrying 20 pallets, or 1.3 million rounds, of 9-millimeter hollow point bullets. Hollow point rounds expand on contact with human flesh and do greater damage than most other types of ammunition.

Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant (CJSC KSAP)
Klimovskiy spetsializirovannyy patronnyy zavod) is an ammunition enterprise located in Russian town Klimovsk near Podolsk in the Moscow region.

It is here that world-famous 7.62×39mm cartridges and wide variety of other service cartridges for various Russian handguns are produced.

In 1936, a new ammunition plant construction was launched near Podolsk.
It was named "Novopodolsky" and on December 30 of the same year was tagged with an official number -- 711.

By the late 1930s, the Novopodolskiy plant had mastered the full production cycle of the cartridges most needed in the army: rifle (7.62×54mmR) and pistol (7.62×25mm) ammunition.

By 1941, the plant had started producing pyrotechnical compounds and, to add to that, 6 more types of cartridges of calibers 7.62 mm and 12.7 mm. Among those listed were the munitions used for feeding renowned Mosin-Nagant rifles, TT pistols, Nagant revolvers and DShK heavy machine-guns, among others.

.. in 1943 a scientific research institute for cartridge design (NII-44) was established on the base of the plant. In the war years, despite the wartime hardships and following a great increase in both new and existing firearms production, the facility output increased nineteenfold. For its achievements during the war, the plant staff was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Degree.

In 1960 the plant was renamed "Klimovsk Stamping Plant" (KSP).
In the same period, 1950-60's, experimental automated manufacture of then-standard intermediate cartridges in 7.62×39mm was launched at the plant. 7.62×39mm rounds are the ammunition for the famed AK-47 series of assault rifles. They are still widely used today, both for old military designs and new professional and amateur hunting rifles, which is reflected in factory's production.

In 2000, the cartridges with nickel-plated casing were presented at the international weapon exhibition IWA in Nuremberg, Germany, followed by an export contract. Later on, the plant proceeded with producing 6 modifications of 7.62×39mm cartridges with bimetallic case.

About the same time, sport pistol cartridges of KSP brand appear:
9 × 19 "Parabellum" and 9 × 18 "Makarov"; hunting rifle cartridges caliber 5.56 "Magnum", 5.56×45mm of .223 Remington type, 7.62 × 51 of .308 Winchester type; a 1943 submachine gun cartridge with a bullet of increased penetration power. These cartridges aroused vivid interest with foreign customers.

A closed-type joint stock company (ZAO) "Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant" was founded in 2001 on the base of OAO "KSP".

Following the new trend of traumatic (which means non-lethal, rubber-bullet, obstructed-barrel) handguns being widely marketed in Russia with notable success, the factory began producing traumatic cartridges to keep up with the demand.

Note: SP stands for "Special Cartridge"; the designation started with SP-1, the 1950s experiment with piston-type silent cartridge.

The SP-4 was developed for PSS silent pistol and the NRS-1 scout shooting knife.
The SP-5 and SP-6 cartridges were developed for special purpose VSS Vintorez and AS Val weapon systems.

    9×18mm 'SP7' pistol cartridge,
--- hollow-point bullet with a polyethylene plug in the expansion cavity
    7.62×31mm 'SP4' silent piston gas-containing pistol cartridge
9×18mm 'SP8' low-penetration (plane hostage crisis scenario) pistol cartridge
    9×39mm 'SP6' subsonic sniper cartridge with armor-piercing steel-core bullet

Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) is a 3,935-acre (15.92 km2) U.S. government-owned, contractor-operated facility in northeastern Independence, Missouri, that was established by Remington Arms in 1941 to manufacture and test small caliber ammunition for the U.S. Army. The facility has remained in continuous operation except for one 5-year period following World War II.

As of July 2007, the plant produced nearly 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition per year.
In addition, Lake City performs small caliber ammunition stockpile reliability testing and has ammunition and weapon testing responsibilities as the NATO National and Regional Test Center.

Remington Arms operated the plant from its inception until 1985, when operations were taken over by Olin Corporation. Since April 2001, it has been operated by Orbital ATK. LCAAP is the single largest producer of small arms ammunition for the United States Armed Forces.

LCAAP is housed on 3,935 acres (15.92 km2) with 458 buildings, 40 igloos and storage capacity of 707,000 square feet (65,700 m2).

Historically, LCAAP waste treatment and disposal occurred on-site and relied on unlined lagoons, landfills, and burn pits. The plant generated large quantities of potentially hazardous wastes and hazardous substances, including solvents, oils, greases, explosives, radionuclides, perchlorates, and heavy metals. As a result of the extensive contamination, the site has been named to the United States Environmental Protection Agency's National Priorities List.

Capabilities of the plant include:

Small arms cartridges;
pyrotechnics;
components such as percussion and electric primer;
small caliber ammunition (5.56 mm; 7.62 mm; .50 caliber and 20 mm);
performs reliability testing of small caliber ammunition
---- (5.56 mm; 7.62 mm; 9 mm, .22 caliber; .45 caliber and .50 caliber);
demilitarization and disposal of small caliber ammunition and explosives.

MFS 2000 Inc. is a Hungarian ammunition manufacturer located in Sirok.
It was established in 1952 as Mátravidéki Fémmu1vek (Matra Provincial Metal Works) and began to produce ammunition for the civilian market in the late 1950s.

Initial military production declined during the 1960s and 1970s in favour of civilian production. The company produced military ammunition with a plant code of "23". Factory code "21" is also associated with the company.

MFS is one of a relatively small number of producers of commercial 7.62×39mm hunting ammunition. It was subcontracted by Fiocchi America under its Fiocchi Int'l brand to manufacture 7.65x17mm Browning (.32 ACP), 9x18mm Makarov (PM), 9x18mm +P Makarov (PMM), and 9x19mm Luger ammunition.

In 2008, the company's ammunition featured indirectly in a controversy over supply of Afghan army and police forces by a contractor to the United States Army. Instead of higher-quality MFS ammunition, Miami-based AEY Inc. provided corroded Chinese surplus ammunition, leading to termination of the Army contract.

In 2009 the firm was absorbed by RUAG Ammotech to become RUAG Ammotec Magyarországi Zrt.
(RUAG Ammotech - Hungary Inc.). They assemble components to make .380 Auto, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and 7.62x39mm Soviet civilian ammunition.

Nexter Systems (formerly known as GIAT Industries or Groupement des Industries de l'Armée de Terre, Army Industries Group) is a French government-owned weapons manufacturer, based in Roanne, Loire. The Nexter group is divided in several smaller entities, with the main one being Nexter Systems.

For many years GIAT struggled to turn a profit.
The company was operated at a loss. A 2001 report by the Cour des Comptes and a 2002 report by the National Assembly described the situation as critical. Not until April 2004 did the board of directors present the public with a financial statement showing a profit of several hundred million Euros. This was mainly due to increased export sales, and the modernization of the Leclerc Main Battle Tank (MBT) and several other armored platforms.

In 2015 was settled the merge between Nexter and Krauss-Maffei, a German defense company.
The resulting entity called KANT Project will be the European leader of terrestrial defense with more than 6,000 employees.

Nexter has a Joint Venture CTA International with BAE Systems to develop and manufacture case telescoped weapon systems and ammunition of 40 mm calibre.

Nexter continues to produce several former GIAT small arms, cannon, and anti-armour weapons.
One such weapon is the Wasp 58, a low cost, one man antiarmour/assault weapon system.

Norma Precision is a Swedish manufacturer of ammunition located in Åmotfors, in the province of Värmland, just 20 km off the Norwegian border. It is commonly referred to as simply Norma.

Today, Norma has a yearly production of about 30 million rounds in 110 calibers.
As such, Norma has one of the largest assortments of rifle ammunition in the world.

Norma was started in 1902 by the Enger brothers from Oslo, who a few years earlier started "Norma Projektilfabrik A/S". The name "Norma" has, contrary to what someone would think, nothing to do with Norwegian or Normandy. The name was chosen because one of the Enger brothers was very fond of the opera Norma by Bellini.

The Swedish shooting movement needed a Swedish supplier and "Norma Projektilfabrik A/S" was asked to establish in Sweden. At this time, Sweden and Norway were in a union. The Enger brothers took the train to Sweden and simply got off at the first stop on the other side of the border, Charlottenberg, and made inquiries about a suitable factory building. However they found the town council took no interest in their plans and therefore decided to try their luck further into Sweden. Next stop was Åmotfors, where the brothers were better welcomed and decided to establish their company.

From the start until the middle of the century, the production was dominated by military ammunition standards. After a while though, hunting ammunition seemed to be more interesting. Norma began to make international connections by this time. This, combined with military interest, forced more modern thinking and new products, which the company pursued with impressive precision.

Nils Kvale and Roy Weatherby were invaluable for Norma's success in the latter half of the 20th century. Nils Kvale was a visionary and competent product developer. In the 1960s a couple of new calibers, like the .308 Norma Magnum and .358 Norma Magnum, were introduced on the market. Nils Kvale's cooperation with American colleagues made Norma well known as a producer of high quality rifle ammunition.

Revenue: $ 2.515 billion (FY 2013)
The ammunition business was and is strong due to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Since 2004, the Olin Corporation has been moving some manufacturing of its Winchester products from East Alton to Oxford, Mississippi, which started with the rimfire cartridge (.22LR) production, then its load and pack operations.

The Olin Corporation is an American manufacturer of ammunition, chlorine, and sodium hydroxide. Based in Clayton, Missouri, it traces its roots to two companies, both founded in 1892: Franklin W. Olin's "Equitable Powder Company" and the "Mathieson Alkali Works". After being headquartered for many years in Stamford, Connecticut, it is now headquartered in Clayton, Missouri.

Franklin Olin, along with his two sons John and Spencer, formed the Western Cartridge Company in direct competition with Remington and Winchester. For a time, his competitors were able to get their suppliers to shut off sources of raw materials in an attempt to drive Olin out of business. In order to survive, Olin diversified the activities of the company.

The company bought a paper manufacturer (the Ecusta Paper Company in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina), a lead shot facility, an explosive primer facility, a cartridge brass manufacturing facility, and a fiber wad facility. The company also started its own brass mill. Together, these companies became the Western Cartridge Company. Through it, the Olins made a fortune supplying ammunition during World War I.

In 1931, Western bought the Winchester Company.
Olin merged the two in 1935, forming Winchester-Western.

In 1944, the various Olin companies were organized under a new corporate parent, Olin Industries, Inc. At the time, Olin Industries and its subsidiary companies ran the St. Louis Arsenal and contributed to the war effort with manufacturing roles at the Badger Army Ammunition and Lake City Army Ammunition Plants. Olin's New Haven and East Alton plants employed about 17,000 workers each -- producing the guns and small-caliber ammunition needed during World War II. The war production helped the Olins to become one of the wealthiest American families of the time.

After the war, the Olins acquired the Mathieson Chemical Corporation -- also founded in 1892, unrelated then to Olin, Mathieson Alkali Works began business in Saltville, VA and in 1893 acquired its neighbor, the Holston Salt and Plaster Corp. Saltville then became a quintessential company town. In Saltville it produced chlorine and caustic soda, leaching a considerable amount of methylmercury (by the company's own estimates, up to 100 pounds per day) into the soils and the North fork of the Holston River. This site was declared a Superfund site in 1982. In 1952, the Mathieson Chemical Company, as it was known by then, acquired the pharmaceutical firm of E.R. Squibb & Sons, spun off in 1968 and is now part of Bristol-Myers Squibb.

In 1952, Mathieson bought a controlling interest in the pharmaceutical firm of E. R. Squibb & Sons (now part of Bristol-Myers Squibb). Afterward, the corporation diversified its interests into a wide variety of businesses, including plastics, cellophane, bauxite mining, automotive specialties, Ramset nailing tools, and home construction. The Olin Ski Company manufactured camping and skiing gear. (Olin skis are now produced under a licensing agreement by K2 Sports.)

Olin Industries and Mathieson Chemical merged in 1954 to form the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation. The new company had 35,000 employees, 46 domestic and 17 foreign plants. The company manufactured phenoxy herbicides and anti-crop agents for Fort Detrick under contract to the U.S. Army Chemical Corps. John Olin retired in 1963; the following year, the company brought in hardware experienced executives to run Winchester. The new management team introduced cheap, forged-metal parts into the Winchester line, which eventually damaged the quality reputation Winchester had previously enjoyed.

The company became the Olin Corporation in 1969, and began to sell off many of its acquired businesses. Since then, the Olin Corporation has been shrinking (except for brief expansion in the early 1980s).

After ongoing declines in its business at Winchester, on December 12, 1980, Olin made the decision to sell Winchester firearms to the firm's employees under the name US Repeating Arms Company. Olin, however, kept the Winchester brand name and licensed it to US Repeating Arms Company. Olin sold its European Winchester ammunition business, and also licensed the Winchester brand name, to GIAT (of Versailles, France).

Olin spun off its specialty chemicals business on February 8, 1999, as Arch Chemicals, Inc. It now focuses more on its ammunition, brass and chlor-alkali businesses. Olin is the third largest chlor-alkali producer in the USA.

Olin announced the sale of its Brass Division in October 2007 (losing $140 million in the sale).
Olin Brass is now owned by Global Brass.

U.S. gun manufacturers offer pure industry plays to traders and investors while ammunition manufacturers dilute exposure through diverse company operations.

Orbital was founded in 1982 by three friends who met while attending Harvard Business School. Armed with business school studies and an initial round of financing, David Thompson, Scott Webster, and Bruce Ferguson, developed a plan for what would become their first product -- the Transfer Orbit Stage (TOS) for NASA. In the three decades that followed, Orbital grew to become a premier provider of space-related systems, pioneering new commercially-driven products and services to make space accessible to millions of people on Earth.

ATK was launched as an independent company in 1990, when Honeywell spun off its defense businesses to shareholders. The former Honeywell businesses had supplied defense products and systems to the U.S. and its allies for 50 years. ATK expanded into the aerospace market with the acquisitions of Hercules Aerospace Company in 1995 and Thiokol Propulsion in 2001. A series of notable contracts and acquisitions continued to increase the ATK's presence in aerospace, defense, and commercial markets.

Orbital ATK was formed through the combination of Orbital and the aerospace and defense businesses of ATK. The merger was announced in April 2014 and closed in February 2015.

Located 45 km from Islamabad and with main manufacturing facilities at Wah Cantonment, POF is a sprawling complex of 14 production units and 6 subsidiaries producing conventional arms and ammunition. Research and development projects have been undertaken to minimize dependence on foreign suppliers.

The Pakistan Ordnance Factories (reporting name: POF) is a major firearms, defence contractor, and military corporation headquartered in Wah Cantt, Punjab, Pakistan. It is "the largest defence industrial complex under the Ministry of Defence Production, producing conventional arms & ammo to international standards.

Presently POF comprises of 14 ordnance factories and 3 commercial subsidiaries. Pakistan Ordnance Factories also manufacture commercial explosives, hunting ammunition and possess extensive facilities for the manufacture of brass, copper and aluminum ingots, extrusions and sections for non-military applications. A garments factory, which has state of the art cloth cutting facilities and modern stitching units, manufactures military uniforms and can also cater for the needs of the civil sector".

Founded in 1951 by the government of Pakistan with early collaboration from the British Royal Ordnance Factory, the POF engineers, develops, produces, manufactures, and promotes a wide range of different types of infantry and special-purpose weapons, explosives, ammunition, mortars, rockets, and the military gear for Pakistan's military. Its corporate leadership comes from a deputation by GHQ where the chief of army staff (COAS) approves the appointment, but POF is under the Ministry of Defense, so the COAS is not in the direct chain of command. The POF is the earliest and one of the largest military corporations in Pakistan, and later influenced many other military corporations in the Pakistan Armed Forces.

During their colonial rule, the British built sixteen ordnance factories in the British Raj, most of which were inherited by India. Pakistan's first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan, issued a directive within four months of the independence of Pakistan to establish an ordnance factory in collaboration with British Royal Ordnance Factory to manufacture 0.303 calibre rifles. In December 1951 Pakistan's second Prime Minister, Khawaja Nazimuddin, inaugurated the first four POF workshops in the small town of Wah Cantonment

POF uses technology and equipment that has been acquired from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and China. The factories in POF employ some of the latest state of the art processes, including computerized numerical controlled machines and flexible Manufacturing systems for the production of precision components.

In addition to meeting the demands of Pakistan Defence Forces, POF products are in service with over 40 countries, in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. Ammunition and rifles have been exported to countries such as Iraq, Croatia and Afghanistan for their respective military establishments.

POF specializes in the manufacturing of commercial explosives, hunting ammunition and possesses extensive facilities for the manufacture of brass, copper and aluminum ingots. A state of the art garments factory, manufactures military uniforms and can also cater for the needs of the civil sector.

As of post 2010s, Pakistan has been aiming to push ahead with its export market but facing difficulties due to international guidelines enforced by the United Nations.

Main Office:
POB 1044 Ramat Hasharon 4711001, Israel
Tel: 972-3-5485222

Israel Military Industries Ltd. (IMI), also referred to as Taas, is an Israeli weapons manufacturer. It manufactures firearms, ammunition and military technology mainly for Israeli security forces (especially Israel's army, the Israel Defense Forces or IDF), although its small arms are very popular throughout the world. ...

The Uzi submachine gun is arguably the most popular submachine gun in the world, because of its compact nature and reliability. Overall, the Uzi has the highest sales statistics of all modern submachine guns, worldwide.

The IMI Galil is a compact assault rifle, along with integrating some other design features. The Negev is IMI's main light machine gun. The Jericho 941 is a semi-automatic pistol, while the Tavor is a bullpup assault rifle. ...the Desert Eagle, is a very powerful (magnum) handgun.

The IMI Small Caliber Ammunition (SCA) Division is recognized as a world leader in small caliber ammunition. The Division manufactures a complete range of ammunition, from 5.56mm to 0.5" (12.7mm), including a wide range of armor piercing, sniping and training ammunitions.
IMI's 5.56mm BALL NATO and 9mm BALL NATO cartridges are NATO qualified.

IMI's SCA Division is recognized by the Israel Ministry of Defense as the exclusive supplier of small caliber ammunition to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Other customers include the U.S. Army, armed forces of major NATO members, law enforcement, special units and commercial markets.

The Small Caliber Ammunition (SCA) Division of IMI is located in Nazareth, where they manufacture 5 primary cartridge types for a countless number of military organizations and civilian markets overseas. The people of the SCA Division are proud of the fact that the refinement of their marketing methods yields about one million ILS per employee per year. They have a total of 250 employees ....

The "Yitzhak" Division is one of the five divisions that make up IMI.
It is named after the late Yitzhak Ironi (Grodtzer), who served as CEO of IMI and as Director General of the Israel Ministry of Defense. The (main) products manufactured at the Nazareth plant are 9mm Luger, 5.56mm (.223 Rem.), 7.62mm (.308 NATO) and 12.7mm (0.5") cartridges.

Naturally, the cartridges are developed in accordance with their requirements, as sometimes those cartridges are intended for a specific mission and we can produce such cartridges within just a few months," explained .. (Israel Shmilovitz, VP of IMI Ltd. and Managing Director of the SCA Division).

History.
The manufacture of small caliber ammunition by Israeli Military Industries had begun even before the State of Israel was established. Following the announcement of the establishment of the State of Israel, the plant relocated to Tel-Aviv and was even visited by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. Only 21 years later ... the plant relocated to Nazareth, and some people say that the idea was to provide employment to many local inhabitants who were unemployed in those days.

In the late 1970s, SCAMP (Small Caliber Ammunition Modernization Program) lines were established. These lines are used at the plant to this day for the mass production of 5.56mm ammunition intended to fulfill the needs of the Israeli defense establishment mainly in emergencies, but they also produce ammunition for IDF, for the training activities of the various security organizations and so forth.

By the end of the second millennium, in the year 2000, the plant was NATO certified for two primary cartridges: 5.56mm and 9mm, which allowed it to supply these ammunition types to the most demanding NATO clients. Three years and five years later, respectively, two substantial contracts were finalized with the US Army for the supply of ammunition on a large scale. The combined scope of those contracts was more than US$ 200 million.

Unfortunately, in 2011 the last contract came to an end and was not renewed. In an attempt to avoid a crisis, the management of the SCA Division reached the conclusion that other markets must be found.

It is definitely a place where we wanted to be, so in that year we embarked on aggressive marketing activity opposite that market," explains Shmilovitz. "Initially we obtained some contracts through the ATK Company, a significant company in the USA, and supplied them with ammunition for the US civilian market, which consists of intensive hunting and sport shooting activities. ... marketing method is based on American bloggers who test the products personally and then serve as public opinion leaders in the extensive US civilian market.

The primary production line at the plant manufactures the 5.56mm cartridge.
As stated, this is the smallest caliber cartridge manufactured here, and it is regarded as the (main) product which currently accounts for 70% of all revenue. The production line yields more than one million components per 24 hours and operates around the clock in three shifts (excluding Saturdays). It was imported especially from Australia in the 1990s and is manned by a total of five employees per shift.

After production, we test them here at the plant," says Eyal Zeevi, the Division's operations and production manager. ... "We purchase the gunpowder and primers from outside sources. We fill the shell with gunpowder, fit the primer and bullet and that is how we produce a cartridge. Following several tests and inspections, we package the cartridges according to the client's requirements. After that we melt the surplus metal and sell it."

As the products are mass-produced, it is impossible to inspect each and every item, so the testing is based on sampling ... 100% of the cartridges are scanned by a specialized X-Ray scanner to verify that the shell contains gunpowder and that the bullet tip contains lead, so as to avoid any errors. ...

Adapting to the Changing Reality

... Today, the SCA Division attempts to remain in control especially in the context of the competition against the major ammunition manufacturers abroad, such as Winchester in the USA and Vista in Europe. ...

As far as revenue is concerned, sales in the last quarter of the year are normally higher.
... Raw materials are normally delivered around the midyear point, and sales come naturally after that. "This year, one third of our sales were to the US civilian market, but we also sold to civilian markets in Europe and elsewhere. Our sales to IDF account for about 44% of our total sales turnover and the balance consists of our sales to the rest of the world -- mainly to NATO members, contracts in Europe, South America and the Far East and about 11% to Israeli special operations forces, ..." Shmilovitz explains. "Last year, on the other hand, we sold one quarter of our yield to the US civilian market and about one half to IDF," he compares.

At the present time, IMI's Small Caliber Ammunition Division is heading in a more modern direction. It attempts to become as technologically-oriented as possible and to adapt itself to the reality that changes at a mind-boggling pace. In the not-too-distant future, ... We will upgrade our production lines so that they operate at a faster pace and quality will automatically be higher."

Sellier & Bellot is a firearms ammunition manufacturer situated in Vladim, Czech Republic.
It is a subsidiary of the Brazilian company CBC (Companhia_Brasileira_de_Cartuchos).
Sellier & Bellot was founded in August 5, 1825 by a German businessman of French origins called Louis Sellier. His family had been royalists who had fled France during the French Revolution. Louis Sellier began manufacturing percussion caps for infantry firearms in a factory in Prague, Bohemia on the request of Francis I, the Emperor of Austria. Sellier was soon joined by his countryman Jean Maria Nicolaus Bellot, who led the company to quickly gain momentum.

Sellier & Bellot products soon established themselves on both European and overseas markets. As early as 1830 the manufacture of percussion caps was in excess of 60 million and peaked later in 1837 at the enormous quantity of 156 million caps.

After the independent state of Czechoslovakia is founded in October 1918, the Company becomes the dominant supplier of handgun ammunition for the Czechoslovak Army and police. ... The Company expands into the Asian and South American markets where Sellier & Bellot's infantry cartridges meet with a great success.

Based on the invention of its managing director Dr. Ing. Frantisek Blechta, the Company became the only manufacturer of silver azide in the world. Owing to this, the production of industrial detonators increased significantly.

In 1945, .. Nationalization of the Company and the decision of the Czechoslovak Government to introduce state monopoly for the manufacture of both military and commercial ammunition supplies a key incentive for further development of Sellier & Bellot. The range of commercial ammunition is extended to forty rifle calibre types, ten pistol and twenty revolver types. Shot shell manufacture ranges from 12 to 410 calibre types. Total output soon increases five times. Approximately 70% of the output is exported. Original 7.62×45, 7.62×39 and 7.62×54R cartridges are successfully introduced into production to cover the demands of the Czechoslovak Army.

In 1992 ... Almost 70% of production volume is exported through the daughter company -- Sellier & Bellot Trade a.s. The company´s products are exported to more than seventy countries around the world.

In 2005, ... Sellier & Bellot JSC celebrates its 180th anniversary.
It is not only one of the oldest engineering companies in the Czech Republic, but also one of the oldest companies in the world. It has been manufacturing products bearing its trademark uninterrupted since 1825.

Smith Wesson Holding's (SWHC) $962-million market capitalization places the company in second place, behind Sturm, Ruger (as an arms manufacturer in the USA). It focuses primarily on revolvers in an iconic brand that's now standard issue at many law enforcement agencies. The company also produces rifles, shotguns, submachine guns, and a variety of ammunition. It was founded in 1856, and began expanding rapidly after obtaining the rights to bored-through technology that supported rear loading ammunition. In addition to the Smith and Wesson brand, it also sells firearms under the M&P, Thompson/Center, and Walther brand names.

The company pays no dividend, placing it at an investment disadvantage compared to its main rival. Five-year returns exceed Sturm, Ruger by a small margin at 35.67%. RGR shows a much higher ten-year return, at 24.86% compared with SWHC's 13.14%. Despite solid performance since the 2009 bear market lows, both companies continue to trade under the bull market highs posted in 2007.

Firearms manufacturers benefit from limited U.S. gun control statutes, driven by a literal interpretation of the second amendment to the Constitution, which give citizens the right to bear arms. Challenges to existing laws have gained no traction in recent years, despite firearm violence that takes more than 10,000 lives annually. Suicides add substantially to these numbers, raising gun-related deaths above 30,000.

U.S. gun manufacturers offer pure industry plays to traders and investors while ammunition manufacturers dilute exposure through diverse company operations.

The company utilizes a variable dividend policy, in which payouts vary quarter to quarter, as a percentage of earnings.

The company produced more than 15.3 million civilian firearms between 1986 and 2010, making it the largest manufacturer in a pool of over 2000 companies. It currently shows annual revenues of more than $500-million. The company's healthy five-year return of 33.74% should continue to attract interest while the dividend yield hasn't fallen below 2% since 2011.

Tula Arms Plant (or Tulsky Oruzheiny Zavod, Russian is a Russian weapons manufacturer founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia in 1712 in Tula, Tula Oblast as Tula Arsenal. Throughout its history, it has produced weapons for the Russian state. Its name was changed from Tula Arsenal to Tula Arms Plant during the Soviet era.

Historically, the plant produced a wide variety of arms and sports weapons for the Russian Army.
Originally, the plant was created to defend the citizens of Tula from nomads' invasions, because they did not have enough weapons, which were produced in Moscow. So, by decree of Peter the Great, construction started on the plant. The factory was equipped with then-progressive equipment such as: water machines, "trochanteric" machines for drilling shafts, grapes, hammers, machines for "scrubbing" - exterior and interior finishes trunks. Firstly in the production of mechanisms had started to use the most advanced technologies, which vastly increased the quality of weapons in Russia.

In the 18th century this plant was recognized as etalon of Russian Arms Production.
In 1720, for the weaponry of Russian army, a plant produced 22 thousand light infantry and dragoon rifles, pistols flintlock, and from the 1749 .. started mass production of cold weapons- knives, sabers, broadswords, swords.

Tula Arms Plant flourished in the second half of 18th century, when in that time, rapidly increased a demand on the artistically decorated weapons. A unique, remarkable for its elegance invention, Tula's plant - "Diamond Line" on the metal, and many other secrets of decoration on metal and wood are rooted precisely in this era. By the end of 18th century, becoming known names such fine gunsmiths as Ivan Pushkin, Ivan Lialin - creator of the double-barreled breech-loading flintlock, Ivan Pauline - the designer who created one of the first examples of a multiply-charged weapons shop.

During the 1961-1982 years, the plant received an order for production of the world-famous Kalashnikov assault rifles (six variants), anti-tank guided missiles - "Little one", "Cornet", "competition" grenade "Bonfire".

During the early to mid Soviet era, Tula Arms Plant produced a variety of military rifles, including the Mosin-Nagant, SVT-40, SKS, and AK-47. It also produced the Nagant M1895 revolver.

From the early 1980s, the factory continued to produce the AK-47 as well as AK-74, and also manufactured the VSS Vintorez, AS Val, OTs-14 Groza, and TOZ rifle weapons designed by TsNIITochMash. The plant also produces large quantities of small arms ammunition for the military as well as for commercial sale.

The factory has also manufactured a number of pistols over the years such as the Korovin pistol, TT pistol, Stechkin automatic pistol, SPP-1 underwater pistol, and MSP Groza silent pistol.

VS-MK2 mine, plastic bodied scatter-able anti-personnel blast mine.

Valsella Meccanotecnica SpA (also known as Valsella) was one of Italy's largest manufacturers of land mines. The Company's headquarters initially were in Montichiari. It had two production plants in Castenedolo near Brescia, Italy. The three companies of Valsella, Tecnovar Italiana SpA, and Misar SpA (both the latter started by former Valsella employees) together were the centre of Italian mine production.

Valsella ceased production of mines in 1994 due to the Italian Government's moratorium on production of anti-personnel mines.

Valsella was formed in 1969-1970 by Brescia-based entrepreneurs, Francesco Rena and Antonio De Cristofano, with ties to the Italian Ministry of Defence and the Redon Trust, a Schaan, Liechtenstein based company of which one of the Valsella founders, Cristofano, was an attorney. In 1980 Valsella Meccanotecnica Spa was formed from the two companies, Valsella SpA and Meccano Tecnica MT SpA. Meccano Tecnica was a company, based in Castenedolo, that produced furniture, chairs and plastic containers especially for televisions. Meccano Tecnica was founded in 1962 but put into liquidation in 1979 just prior to its joining with Valsella. Meccano Tecnica was 50% owned by the Redon Trust.

Valsella owned 50% of a Milan-Rome company, Valtec, which was responsible for sales, and 32.4% ownership of Motomar, a Milan-based manufacturer of marine motors. Overall, Valsella, via the Redon Trust was controlled by a Swiss-based Italian, Paolo Jasson resident in Collina d'Oro, Switzerland until the arrival of Fiat in 1984.

In 1971, Valsella Sud Srl, located in Bari, was formed and sold to a former Valsella employee, Ludovico Fontana, and renamed to Tecnovar Italiana SpA. In 1993 the then owner, Vito Alfieri Fontana (who inherited the business) had concerns as to the impact of his business as a mine manufacturer. He started a program of restructuring the company away from certain weapons, and in 1997 shut the company.

In 1976, following a legal dispute, the Valsella founder, Francesco Rena, resigned from Valsella and joined Società esplosivi industriali SpA (SEI), the company that Valsella used to fill their mines with explosives.

... In 1982, Valsella Meccanotecnica Pte Ltd (Singapore) (Valsella Pte Ltd) was formed as a subsidiary of Valsella via its finance companies Finabel SpA and Dukan sas. The finances were managed by Rimon Srl, Falcom Spa, and Unione Fiduciaria Spa. The mines were provided by Valsella, and along with explosives from Bofors, these were assembled by Chartered Industries of Singapore in Singapore for export out of Singapore.

... In 1991 the Valsella's managers, consultants, and administrators -- Antonio De Cristofano, Mario Fallani (director of Casalee Italia), Gabriel van deuren (manager of Cofitec), Cesare Somigliana, Calista Calisto, Paulo Jasson, Paolo Torsello, Vito Taddeo, and Peter Kurt Maier -- were charged with illegal trading with Iraq. The allegations were related to the estimated 9 million anti-personnel mines that were sent to Iraq via Singapore. These mines were used by the Iraqis during the war with Iran, the Gulf war and the attacks on the Kurds. The defendants plea-bargained at their 1991 trial; although they acknowledged having committed irregularities, the Supreme Court acquitted the managers of the serious crimes of illegal arms trade and violation of currency regulations. ...

In 1999, Valsella moved to complete civil production of engineering and vehicle projects.
Prior to bankruptcy, it was taken over in 1999 as a production site for Bremach. The company (eventually) merged into the company Pro.De Srl in 2005.

Vista Outdoor (VSTO) came to life in early 2015 after Alliant Techsystems spun off its ammunition division as part of a merger with Orbital Sciences. This merger created the current Orbital ATK (OA). 40% of the original entity's 2013 revenues came from ammunition sales, providing a solid growth foundation for the newly issued stock. Ammunition was sold under the Federal Premium, Fusion, and Eagle brands, but new product lines have been added since the spinoff.

The company bills itself as a "leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of consumer products in the growing outdoor sports and recreation markets", setting itself on a course that should diversify its product line in coming years. It's divided into two segments, with Shooting Sports hosting rifles, ammunition, shotgun and range systems. Its Outdoor Products division also includes firearm-related products, including target systems, mounts, decoys, and blinds.

$2.08 billion in sales for the year ending March 31, 2105, confirms this is a major player in the guns and ammunition sector. The stock came public near $37 on February 10, 2015, and traded to an all-time high at $49.27 in August. Revenues have shown little growth since it came public, but it's too early to predict long-term trends, given the limited information and the continued rollout.

Olin (OLN) owns Winchester Ammunition, which sells bullets though Super X, Supreme, Supreme Elite AA and Winlite brand names. This is a partial industry play because Winchester sales comprise just 20% to 25% of total company revenues.

WOLF Performance Ammunition is a trademark associated with Sporting Supplies International (SSI), a corporation in the United States. The ammunition is mostly manufactured by Tulskiy Patronniy Zavod (Tula Cartridge Plant) in Tula, Tula District, Russia. Some .22-caliber rimfire ammunition is made by SK Jagd und Sportmunitions Gmbh (SK Hunting- and Sporting-Ammunition) of Schönebeck, Salzlandkreis, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The Tula Cartridge Plant and Ulyanovsk Machinery Plant no longer manufacture cartridges for Wolf.

In 2005/2006, there was a shortage of 7.62×39mm ammunition in the United States.
This had the effect of causing prices to almost double in some cases and WOLF's ammo to nearly disappear from the U.S. market in late 2006 -- early 2007. The ammunition shortage was due to Russian production lines struggling to fill a massive order placed by Venezuela, who had just adopted the AK-103 series of rifles, and by the United States to supply the fledgling Afghan Army. Even so, Wolf's 7.62×39mm is available in standard full-metal-jacket configuration, as well as hollow-point and soft-point bullet loads suitable for hunting.

In 2007/2008, supplies of Wolf steel-cased .308 ammunition became increasingly rare, and major distributors were completely sold out. This, along with diminishing supplies of military surplus 7.62×51mm NATO, had driven .308 Winchester prices to an all-time high. This shortage is exacerbated by the strain of filling the Afghan Army order. As Wolf catches up with demand, new supplies will become available in the United States. When these new supplies hit the market, it is unknown how much the prices will have increased.

In 2010/2011, Wolf discontinued the use of the red sealant used around the primer and case neck intended to keep moisture out and prolong shelf life. They received too many complaints from end users of a buildup from the red sealant on their firearms; thus, all new ammo produced from both plants will no longer have any red sealant.

Lacquer coating

Wolf no longer manufactures ammunition with a lacquer coating on the cartridge casing due to issues concerning lacquer-coated steel cartridges becoming stuck in the chamber of a firearm after firing, with difficulty in ejecting the spent cartridge afterwards. This appears to be more of a problem with cartridges with narrowly tapering walls (e.g. .223 Remington) than those with rather steep case walls such as 7.62×39mm cartridges or pistol ammunition. This also does not seem to pose much of a problem for Soviet- or East Bloc-designed weapons that tend to have looser chamber clearances than Western-designed weapons.

Tests have shown that steel-cased Wolf cases do not obdurate sufficiently to form a good gas seal against the chamber when compared to brass-cased ammunition. As a result, when Wolf cartridges are fired, some of the combustion by-products are deposited between the case and the chamber, causing a buildup of carbon that is well in excess of normal. Firing a brass case (that does expand fully) after using Wolf ammunition without cleaning the gun first can result in the brass case being "glued" into the chamber by the carbon buildup. This issue has nothing to do with the lacquer coating vaporising or melting, as has mistakenly been suggested. The problem is one of carbon deposition, which creates the same end result (i.e.; a stuck cartridge that has jammed in the chamber).

It is important to emphasise that Wolf ammunition is perfectly safe to use because it conforms to all SAAMI standards. However, it is recommended that firearms be thoroughly cleaned after using Wolf ammunition due to the increased rate of carbon buildup within the chamber. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the looser chamber dimensions of Soviet-designed weapons allow for more room during firing and extraction. Soviet or East Bloc weapons do not experience these problems.

Note: all ammunition currently manufactured by Wolf has polymer-coated or brass cartridge cases, and any obturation problems have been radically reduced.

Steel-jacketed bullets

In addition to using a steel casing, certain types of Wolf rifle cartridges use steel-jacketed bullets, which are often copper-plated and cosmetically similar to standard copper-jacketed bullets. The copper exterior of the bullet is approximately .005 inch thick, with an underlying steel jacket of about 1/32 inch thick. This type of ammunition is labeled "bimetal".

Indoor shooting ranges, which often use backstops constructed of steel, have accordingly widely prohibited steel-jacketed and bimetal ammunition to prevent shooters from damaging their backstops (as well as steel-to-steel contact from the round causing sparks, which, in just the right environment, could ignite unburnt powder residue in the air).

U.S. gun manufacturers offer pure industry plays to traders and investors while ammunition manufacturers dilute exposure through diverse company operations.
